<![CDATA[Research Associate (KERAUNIC) (FM12034)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12034 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12034 We’re seeking a Research Associate to contribute to KERAUNIC research into lightning risk threat on the fast-expanding electricity network assets.

This project aims to develop novel strategies to assess lightning risks for NGET transmission infrastructure assets considering past climatological data and adding superimposed long-term climate site-specific trend projections. Because climate change influences lightning occurrence and patterns, the project can inform the design and location of new energy infrastructure, ensuring appropriate lightning protection. The project will improve system planning, regulatory compliance, lead to reduced damage, downtime and maintenance costs.

Previous related projects focused on real-time fault management for distribution networks offering limited transmission level insights. Yet, growing evidence has it that climate change is influencing lightning, in terms of formation, severity, patterns, frequency, and distribution.

This position will involve signal processing methodology to retrieve, process and archive large data sets.

This position is offered on a full-time basis, fixed term for 1 year.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Dr Martin Fullekrug, Reader, at eesmf@bath.ac.uk or Dr Laiz Souto, Lecturer, at lsdc21@bath.ac.uk. Please ensure your application is submitted through our website.

About you

The successful applicant will have:

 • A PhD in a relevant subject area
 • Significant depth and breadth of specialist knowledge of lightning, climate, and energy
 • Familiarity with advanced signal processing methodology to retrieve, process, and archive big data

Our work includes a range of approaches from model-based tracking to data-driven volumetric/point cloud recovery – our goals are to ensure high fidelity (i.e. cinematic quality) and control (e.g. artistic direction) in the process to create new technologies for the creative industries including applications in film, TV, games and immersive AR/VR experiences.

About the role

This position will form part of a team of researchers, operational and technical staff (across the Universities of Bath and Bristol) dedicated to creating the next generation of capture technologies for the creative industries.

This work is part of the wider MyWorld Project ().

Broadcasters, filmmakers and streaming organisations are commissioning content with increasingly challenging acquisition specifications that extend realities into new hybrid spaces merging the real and the virtual.

They demand content capture of faster, smaller, more colourful, darker and generally more immersive spaces.

This position plays a role in the wider research goals of tackling complex problems in motion and volumetric capture, in the creation of digital humans, in virtual production, particularly through the development of new technology making use of AI and data to drive mobile platforms – enhanced workflows for the most challenging human and natural acquisition environments.

In addition, we will hide the technology behind interfaces that allow for creative users to control, assess and direct the process interactively.

These innovations will result in a new perception-driven framework for solving important video production problems that offer more efficient and flexible workflows and ultimately improved visual quality.

All specifically directed to work directly with creative end-users, e.g. artists, actors and directors. Together, these innovations are capable of making a step change in performance capture and generalisation to enable creation of the next generation of more engaging visual media.

<![CDATA[Research Associate in Digital Hydraulic Fluid Power (FM11791R)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM11791R /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM11791R We are seeking a Research Associate to take a key role in the design and development of digital hydraulic fluid power technologies and control systems. The role is funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, investigating Digital Hydraulic Fluid Power Technologies for Decarbonising Off-road Vehicles.

Hydraulic fluid power has several advantages, such as high power density, compactness, low weight, fast response, and good controllability. However, the current hydraulic control method involves using valves to throttle flow, reduce pressure, and control the speed and force of the load. Although this approach is simple to operate, it is highly energy inefficient, and the average power efficiency of fluid power systems is only about 21%.

This project aims to design, develop and prototype next-generation digital hydraulic technologies and control systems to significantly improve hydraulic energy efficiency, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions to decarbonise off-road vehicles for a sustainable and greener future. In addition, there are also opportunities to conduct interdisciplinary research on highly efficient actuation mechanisms, collaborating with colleagues nationally and internationally.

You will be responsible for delivering high-quality research on the topic, including:

 • Design and modelling of digital hydraulic fluid power technologies
 • Prototyping, validating and evaluating digital hydraulic converters
 • Digital fluid power system integration and experimental validations
 • Stimulating and creating pathways to impact and disseminate the research outcomes and promote the exploitation of the new technologies

You will be responsible for planning and performing your own research activities and will be expected to take an active role in supporting PhD and undergraduate research students within the laboratory.

This position is offered on a fixed term basis with an expected end date of 1st September 2026.

About you

Our ideal candidate will

 • Hold a PhD degree in a subject area of direct relevance for the project
 • Have previous experience in one or more of the following: modelling, design, control or prototyping of fluid power components and systems
 • Have excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
 • Be self-motivated and have excellent communication skills

You should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work as part of a team and discuss your work with a range of audiences.

<![CDATA[Research Associate (Material flows for UK buildings circular economy) (FM11942)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM11942 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM11942 About the role

We are looking for a researcher to join our team at the Institute for Sustainability at the 澳门六合彩开奖记录2023, to work on an exciting new five-year multi-institution project on circular economy for buildings: .

BuildZero aims to understand if the UK’s needs from its building stock can be met with zero new raw material extraction, zero emissions and zero waste. Our research will show to what extent this vision is achievable and desirable, and provide a platform for translating circular economy approaches into practice and policy at scale.

Within this wider project, your focus will be on understanding flows of relevant materials and components in and out of the UK building stock, using various data sources to model flows and stocks over time using Material Flow Analysis approaches. You will also be an integral member of the large, multidisciplinary BuildZero project team, and will contribute to wider project tasks, events, and outputs.

This role is initially offered for 2 years with an expected end date of 31st October 2026. There is potential for a researcher who brings or can develop suitable skills to extend this to deliver further work packages: on modelling how circularity strategies interact to create change at UK building stock scale, and developing and using novel 'prospective life cycle assessment' methods to ensure environmental impacts properly consider expected future changes to processes and systems.

If you are interested, please get in touch to find out more or informally discuss the project before applying: email Dr Rick Lupton (Bath project lead) on rcl38@bath.ac.uk.

About you

We are looking for applicants who have a PhD or equivalent relevant experience, in industrial ecology or related areas. You will also need:

 • Knowledge of relevant modelling approaches such as Material Stock and Flow Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment.
 • Experience of successfully processing and interpreting data, building models and analysing research results in a transparent and reproducible way, using tools such as Python (or equivalent).
 • Ability to organise and prioritise your own workload, and to work in a broad interdisciplinary team, both within Bath and across the wider project.
 • Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills.
 • Familiarity with issues of circular economy and the built environment (desirable).

<![CDATA[Research Associate (fixed-term) (ED11919)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED11919 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED11919 About the role

This job is part of a BBSRC sLola funded consortium MultiDefence ().

This consortium brings together leading specialists as well as early career researchers and technicians from the universities of Exeter, Cambridge, Durham, Manchester, Bath, Bristol, Liverpool and St Andrews to build a network of expertise in bioinformatics, molecular microbiology, biochemistry, mathematical modelling, microscopy, and experimental evolution techniques.

Our collective ambitious goal for this project is to tease apart how complex, multi-layered, bacterial immune systems operate at the level of individual molecules, cells, populations and microbial communities.

You will benefit from the broad expertise of this consortium and have opportunities to train in other labs.

At the 澳门六合彩开奖记录2023, you will be within the Taylor lab group () where our goal is to utilise the power of microbial experimental evolution to decode the evolutionary and ecological forces shaping bacterial genomes.

We foster a supportive and respectful environment and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of scientific integrity.

As a member of Research Staff at the 澳门六合彩开奖记录2023, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

Bacterial genomes have evolved sophisticated defence systems against infections by mobile genetic elements (MGEs), including phages and plasmids, that shape genome structure and function.

The very recent discovery of dozens of diverse and formerly unknown defence systems that cluster in 'defence islands' has led to the hypothesis that bacterial immune systems consist of multiple integrated layers that act in concert to constrain MGE infections; analogous to how our own innate and adaptive immune systems work together to combat pathogen infections.

This project will propel our understanding of microbial genome evolution, improve our ability to predict and manipulate the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and help to optimise the use of phages to combat bacterial pathogen infections (phage therapy).

About you

Your part in the project will be focused on understanding how these multi-layered defence systems are regulated, both locally (i.e. on the defence islands) and globally (i.e. with regulatory elements in the host cell).

You will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline.

You will have good, practical experience with molecular microbiology techniques and genetic engineering which will be used to validate predicted regulatory elements.

In addition, previous experience with flow cytometry and FACS would be beneficial for expression analysis.

Some experience with bacteria-phage culture techniques is desirable.

Excellent experimental design, scientific writing and data analysis skills are essential.

This role will involve working closely with a full-time research technician that will support the project for the first year.

Additional information

This is a full-time, fixed-term position, expected to end December 2027.
