We have an exciting opportunity to join our team focussed on the support of specialist and advanced IT and Audio-Visual equipment, software and solutions supported by Digital, Data and Technology Group (DDaT), within a changing business, research, and technical environment.

You will be part of a team of Senior Service Analysts supporting the administrative, learning, teaching, and research activities of the University. You will be actively involved in the day-to-day delivery of an effective IT Delivery Service to the University, acting as the point of escalation for incidents and changes and will provide technical expertise in their area.

A typical day may see you helping to set up and deploying equipment within a research laboratory, providing advice and guidance on specialist software requests, or installing software for a computational project across a wide range of hardware and operating systems. However, no two days are the same, as every single day brings its own new challenges and opportunities to gain experience.

You will also assist in developing IT Delivery and Operations support services, whilst maintaining positive relationships with the customer-base and staff within DDaT.

An ideal candidate in this role would have the following:

  • Be self-motivated.
  • Be able to work alone, in a team or with your peers.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and management skills, alongside an understanding of technology and demonstrable IT and/ or Audio Visual (AV) Support skills. 
  • Proven experience of supporting IT or Audio-Visual hardware, software, or services (1st and 2nd tier) ideally in an academic environment.
  • Functional knowledge of IT Service Management principles and experience 
  • Experience of effective working in a customer service environment
  • Familiarity with using and supporting multiple operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and mobile operating systems.

You will possess a deep understanding of hardware, software, and underlying operating system concepts, and would be looking to develop skills in all facets of IT and AV support, to support the diverse teaching and research capability of the University.

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) permanent basis.

The Senior Engineer role sits within the Delivery & Operations pilar within DDaT. As a Senior Engineer, you will be working in 2nd and 3rd line support, resolving problems, documenting root causes, and improving service levels, maintaining current systems, upgrades, and changes.

You will be a subject matter expert and trusted partner working professionally and collaboratively with colleagues, business stakeholders, analysts, and project managers, to develop, configure, support, and maintain your field and help to develop IT infrastructure systems and services. 

You will help manage the transition of new elements into operational service, perform capacity planning and performance management, day-to-day operations, and delivery of new services and infrastructure systems and solutions, in-line with the agreed project portfolio, to ensure they are meeting the current and future requirements of the University.

Your role will focus on all thing's database, from installation and troubleshooting to optimising server availability and maintaining back-up procedures.

Additional areas include:

  • Active Directory infrastructure
  • Enterprise Backup and Storage
  • Server infrastructure, provision and management
  • Cloud Infrastructure

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) permanent basis. 

There is a market supplement of up to £2,000 available at our discretion, based on skills and experience.

About you:

  • Proven database skills - preferably including SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL and MariaDB
  • Experience managing production servers, large databases, and multiple instances
  • Familiar with Windows Server, Solaris, Red Hat and Ubuntu
  • Expertise in capacity planning, backup, recovery/DR, and database security
  • Advanced skills in automating SQL tasks; familiarity with Oracle PL/SQL and UNIX scripting (a bonus)
  • Comfortable with PowerShell scripting or other automation techniques

Reporting to the Head of IT Portfolio Management, this role will be responsible for establishing and leading a new Quality Assurance and Testing (QAT) practice. The Senior Test Engineer will define QAT policies, strategies, utilise test automation where appropriate to implement best practices and drive excellence in software and service testing. 

Working with the IT Portfolio Team, the Senior Test Engineer will support the delivery of projects within the IT Projects portfolio, through the implementation of appropriate test and quality assurance frameworks and processes that integrate with the Project Management Framework and ITIL processes. 

The role will work with colleagues and key stakeholders across the organisation to define and implement consistent approaches to business acceptance testing ensure the quality assurance of technology related projects and services. 

You will collaborate with technical delivery teams across the department to ‘shift testing left’, educating, empowering and enabling delivery teams to embed Quality Assurance and Testing best-practices within their day-to-day work. 

This role will also represent QAT practice at the regular Change Advisory Board (CAB) to ensure appropriate quality assurance around changes to live IT services.

Previous experience of the following:

  • Establishing and leading a QAT team, ideally in an academic environment.
  • Building sustainable relationships across key IT and University wide stakeholders.
  • Supervising or managing and developing an effective team in a complex environment.
  • Test automation using industry-standard tools (e.g., Selenium, JUnit, TestNG).
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, tools, and best practices.

Assisting in developing IT Delivery and Operations support services, whilst maintaining positive relationships with the customer-base and staff within the Digital Data and Technology Department.

  • Functional knowledge of IT Service Management principles and experience

  • Would be a confident user of Microsoft Office products and able to provide advice and support on these products.
